Division I Second Place Winner Sahun Hong
Sahun Hong is a junior honor student at TCU where he is majoring in Piano Performance under Professor John Owings. Born in 1994 in Seoul, Korea, Sahun has studied piano since the age of three. Prior to moving to Fort Worth in 2002, he studied with Professor Gary Wolf in Orlando, Florida. He has played in master classes for Veda Kaplinsky, Martin Canin and Nelita True. Before entering TCU, Sahun performed for 28 schools in the Fort Worth ISD through the Van Cliburn Foundation’s “Musical Awakenings” program. Among the many gifts he received, his most treasured is a personally autographed photo of Van Cliburn. He was also invited to perform for the Educational Program of Performing Arts Fort Worth at the Van Cliburn Recital Hall in 2005.
Sahun has won numerous prizes and awards. Most recently, he won First Prize in the Piano Division and overall Grand Prize in the 2009 Juanita Miller Concerto Competition, sponsored by the Texas Association of Symphony Orchestras (TASO). As a result, he will perform next season with the Brazos Valley Symphony and the Irving Symphony Orchestra. He will also be the featured performer at the annual conference of TASO this April. Sahun won the UTA Concerto Competition in 2007 and the Solo Competition in 2008. He was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2008 Lennox International Young Artists Competition in Richardson, Texas. As a winner of the TCU Concerto Competition, Sahun performed the first movement of Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3 with the TCU Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Germán Gutiérrez in February 2008. He won the TMTA District Competition in March 2008. In May 2008 Sahun performed the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the Elite International Chamber Orchestra, sponsored by the Texas Performing Arts Association, under the baton of David Wong. The April 2008 issue of Fort Worth Magazine featured Sahun in an article titled “Brilliant Minds.” Sahun enjoys math, reading, speedcubing, magic tricks, chess, and table tennis.
