Roger Fratena

 

Roger Fratena joined the Dallas Symphony in 1971, the same year he graduated from Oberlin Conservatory with a bachelor's degree in music and bachelor and master degrees in music education. Fratena is a bass instructor at the University of Texas at Arlington and has taught at Richland and Eastfield Community Colleges in Dallas and Texas Tech University. He has been principal bassist of the AIMS Orchestra in Austria, and currently performs in the "Music in the Mountains Summer Festival" in Durango, Colorado. As a composer and member of ASCAP, two of his ragtime pieces have been performed by the Dallas Symphony and other professional orchestras.

SATURDAY PRELIMINARY JUDGES

Steven Harlos

Steven Harlos made his solo debut at Lincoln Center in 1986, performing the Gershwin Concerto in F. Known for his sensitivity as a collaborative artist, he has performed with many artists of international stature, including Timofei Dokshutzer, Harvey Phillips, Erick Friedman and Gervase de Peyer. In the popular music field, he has worked with such diverse artists as Marvin Gaye, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan, Maureen McGovern and Tommy Tune. As a jazz pianist, he assisted Dick Hyman in the first performances of his ballet "Piano Man" with the Cleveland Ballet, and subsequently performed the work with the Cleveland Ballet on numerous occasions. He also performed Hyman's ballet "The Bum's Rush" with the American Ballet Theatre at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Successes in the field of composition include the publication of his Sonata Rubata for flute and piano and "Benniana," a jazz sonata for clarinet and piano. He currently serves as staff keyboardist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and is coordinator of piano and collaborative piano at the University of North Texas.

Janine Stockdell Geisel has been with the FWSO since 1989. A native of Joliet, Illinois, she began playing the violin in fourth grade through Joliet's public school music programs. She graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy, after attending the high school for three years. She then studied with violin pedagogue Josef Gingold at Indiana University with whom she received her bachelor's and master's degrees in music performance. Prior to joining the FWSO, she was a member of the Omaha Symphony and Northwest Chamber Orchestra. She has also performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Wagner Festival, Dallas Ballet Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Music in the Mountains Festival, Blossom Music Festival, Banff Chamber Music Festival and Hubbard Chamber Music Series.

 

She is married to violinist and violist John Geisel, who is a member of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. They have a 13 year old daughter, Melissa.

 

ALFRED MOULEDOUS is professor of piano at the Meadows School of the Arts. He has been a faculty member at SMU for 46 years. During most of his tenure at SMU he also served as pianist for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Professor Mouledous earned the B.M., M.M., Performer's Certificate, and Artist Diploma from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of Cecile Genhart. He was also a scholarship student of Walter Gieseking in Saarbruechen and Alfred Cortot in Paris. Mouledous has performed numerous solo and chamber recitals throughout the United States and has performed concerti with many major orchestras, collaborating with conductors such as Georg Solti, Erich Leinsdorf, Howard Hanson, Eduardo Mata, Paul Paray, Paul Kletzki, and Donald Johanos. He has recorded for Mercury and Envoy Records and performed in concert on radio and television.
